The December 1907 issue of The Numismatist addressed protests in the newspapers concerning the removal of "In God We Trust" from the new High Relief twenty-dollar gold pieces designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The author disagreed with the protests, arguing that the motto was introduced at a time of great national crisis and was inappropriate during peacetime. The coins are "distinctly Rooseveltian" in character, for both their impressive High Relief detail, and their overt symbolism is strongly tied to the sense of American progressivism around turn of the century. Today, examples are prized for exactly that: their beauty and historical significance. Of course, they are also considered to be among the most beautifully designed US coins.
