There are two primary ways you can generally discern whether a clipped coin is a legitimate mint error or whether it was just damaged outside of the mint, this coin exhibits both!

The first is the reversal of the copper core. We've supplied you with an image from this coin demonstrating the effect. The other (also visible on this specimen) is known as the "Blakesley" effect where the pole opposite the clip will show a very weak strike at and sometimes around the rim into the design.
