Key to the series, the 1916-D has a scant mintage of just 264,000. The issues tiny mintage is attributable to a November 1916 directive from the U.S. Mint Director to the Denver mint to strike just the quarter dollar denomination (old design, "Barber Quarter") until a large order had been fulfilled.
