Subject: Famous Belgians - Pierre Paul Rubens, Flemish Baroque Artist (1577-1640)

Medalist: Adolphe Christian Jouvenel (1798-1867)

This is a lovely ultra high relief obverse 46mm bronze medal which was part of Jouvenel's Famous Belgians series struck and distributed in the late 1840s and early 1850s.

Rubens was considered the most influential artist of Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens' highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, color, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. Rubens specialized in making altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.
