Richmond, VA has always had robust trade with Canada, as such we've had the privilege to see a great many scarce Canadian coins and paper money. Perhaps however, none so rare as this particular note. This will be just the 7th or 8th known note to come up for sale (one note sold previously and was reported as new for its second sale).
Founded in 1836, the Bank of British North America ran for a hair over 80 years and had upwards of 100 branches, eventually being merged into the Bank of Montreal.
At least 2 of the 7 (or 8) known notes reside in institutional hands and another was stamped as cancelled. That leaves just 4 or 5 unadulterated known notes in private hands.
