By some accounts the primary purpose for the $3 gold coin was to make the purchase of larger quantities of 3¢ stamps easier. Whatever the reason, this "odd" denomination is always in demand and one of the more interesting coins in U.S. history.
The 1864 is scarce by all accounts. It saw a mintage of just 2,630 with a total of just around 500 believed extant in all grades.
