By some accounts the primary purpose for the $3 gold coin was to make the purchase of larger quantities of 3¢ stamps easier. Whatever the reason, this "odd" denomination is always in demand and one of the more interesting coins in U.S. history.

The 1856-S is considered slightly more difficult to obtain getting substantially more difficult in AU and better grades.
