Confederate currency was first issued just before the American Civil War in 1861. Though it was first issued an alternative to Union currency the currency quickly devolved into means to finance the war. The currency was never backed by hard assets, simply a promise to repay the bearer when the South won the war – of course, this never occurred. As the South began to show signs of weakness, inflation began to skyrocket and confidence in the currency plummeted. Notes are cataloged into 72 major T-types (T-1 to T-72), originated by Grover Criswell. Numerous researchers have further cataloged them into sub-types. We list most of our individual notes with the major "T-Type", Pierre Fricke's "PF-Subtype" and its corresponding Grover Criswell "Cr.Subtype".
