1838 “AM I NOT A WOMAN" Hard Times Token, Contemporary Copy HT-81B - Extremely Fine.

27mm.

I believe this is a contemporary copy of HT-81. I have only ever seen one other specimen which was from the Early American History Auctions sale, October 11, 2003, lot 471. That specimen was said to be struck in silver and it was questioned whether or not it was cast.

Three things are absolute about our specimen.

- This coin is absolutely a cast copy.

- This coin was absolutely cast from the same master as the coin in the EAHA 10/11/03 sale.

- This coin is white metal, not silver.

Though not an area I specialize in, I've handled more than a few HT-81s over the years. The issue is not particularly rare but are very popular and I believe generally deserved of the prices they command. That said, beyond the EAHA coin I've never seen specimen like this one. I purchased this coin in early 2017 along with a few HT-80s and some other Black Americana.
